Description
Château de Fieuzal is one of the established estates of Pessac-Léognan, part of the 1959 Graves classification, on the gravel terraces south of the city of Bordeaux. The red is a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The deep gravel soils that give the Graves its name drain freely and store warmth, pushing the late ripening Cabernet to full maturity, while the underlying clay holds water for the Merlot. The wine ages eighteen months in oak barrels. That extended period allows malolactic conversion to soften the acidity, the firm Cabernet tannins to polymerise and round through slow oxygen exchange, and the wood to lend sweet spice, vanilla and a fine, savoury structure. The colour is an intense ruby. The nose unfolds blackcurrant and red cherry with tobacco and a graphite, gravelly minerality that marks the appellation. The palate is structured and balanced, with firm but fine tannins, fresh acidity and a long, earthy finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanted an hour ahead. It is built for roast lamb, beef and game, and for mature hard cheeses.
