Description
Château Cos d'Estournel makes G d'Estournel as its more immediate red, drawn from the Saint-Estèphe appellation in the northern Médoc and blending Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Saint-Estèphe sits on the cooler, more clay-rich soils at the top of the Médoc, where the clay holds water through dry summers and gives the wines firm structure and a fresh, savoury line. The estate farms sustainably. After fermentation the wine is aged twelve months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and lends cocoa, cedar and sweet spice to the fruit, while the Petit Verdot adds colour and a peppery lift. The result is built for balance, pairing freshness with depth. The colour is a deep ruby. The nose shows red and dark fruits, redcurrant and cherry, over tobacco, cocoa and earth. The palate is medium to full bodied, with fine ripe tannins, bright acidity and a long, structured finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted ahead. It suits roast beef, lamb and game.
