Description
Chateau Brane-Cantenac is a classified Second Growth in Margaux, an estate dating to the 18th century with some of the finest sites in the Medoc. Its name comes from the Baron de Brane, an early champion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the region. The blend leads with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, rounded out with Cabernet Franc and a little Carmenere. The vineyards sit on the gravel plateau of Cantenac, where deep, well-drained gravel banks store warmth and push the vines to root deeply, the foundation of Margaux's perfumed, refined style. The Gironde's maritime climate gives a long, gentle ripening season. The wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels, whose slow oxygen exchange polishes the tannins and adds cedar and fine spice. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows creamy cassis, ripe plum and red cherry, with cedar, tobacco and a touch of earth. The palate is medium to full and elegant, with smooth, fine tannins and a long, savoury finish built for ageing. Decant an hour ahead and serve at 17 to 18 degrees in a large glass. It suits lamb and beef.
