Description
Château Angélus is one of the leading estates of Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux, a Premier Grand Cru Classé blending Merlot with Cabernet Franc. The vineyard lies in a natural amphitheatre below the village, a south-facing slope of clay and limestone with sandier soils at its foot. The amphitheatre shape gathers warmth and shelters the vines, helping Merlot in particular ripen fully, while the limestone subsoil holds water through dry spells and lends freshness and length. Merlot brings flesh, dark fruit and supple texture, Cabernet Franc structure, perfume and a savoury lift. The wine spends eighteen months in French oak, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannin and adds spice, cedar and a fine grain that frame the fruit and set the wine up for long ageing. The colour is a deep, dark ruby. The nose shows ripe blackberry and black cherry with dark chocolate, tobacco and toasted oak. The palate is full and structured, the dark fruit dense and the tannin firm but polished, carrying a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted well ahead, or cellar it for further development. It pairs with roast beef, lamb and game.
