Description
Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot farms this Marsannay from Les Echezots, a plot at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits singled out as one of the appellation's finest and a candidate for premier cru status. The grape is Pinot Noir, farmed biodynamically. Marsannay sits on limestone and clay slopes; the limestone keeps acidity fresh and lends the wine its mineral drive and fine tannins, while the clay adds a little more colour and body than the villages further south. The northern, slightly cooler position preserves the bright red-fruit aromatics that mark the cru. Low-intervention, biodynamic farming and careful cellar work keep the fruit pure and the tannins fine. The wine shows a bright ruby colour and a nose of red cherry and redcurrant over dried flowers and earth. The palate is medium-bodied and elegant, with fresh acidity, silky tannins and a savoury, mineral finish. Serve at 16 degrees and decant 30 minutes ahead. It suits poultry, game and mushroom dishes.
