Description
Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot works this red in Gevrey-Chambertin, the northernmost of the great Cote de Nuits appellations. The vineyards sit on marl soils covered with silt and pebbles, a limestone-rich base that holds water and lends Gevrey Pinot Noir its firm structure and dark-fruited depth. The domaine farms biodynamically, and the old vines here give small berries with concentrated skins. Fermentation is followed by eighteen months in oak barrel, where slow oxygen exchange rounds the tannins and adds a fine layer of woodspice without masking the fruit. Charlopin favours a ripe, generously extracted style, so the wine carries real weight for a Burgundy. Expect a deep ruby colour and a nose of dark cherry, red berries and rose, with earth and a touch of smoke behind. The palate is full for Pinot Noir, with ripe red fruit, a savoury undertow and tannins that are present but polished. The finish is long and mineral. Serve at sixteen to eighteen degrees, ideally decanted, in a large Burgundy glass. It suits roast duck, game birds and mushroom dishes.
