From the Clos Entre Deux Velles in Fixin, at the northern end of the Cote de Nuits, this is Philippe Charlopin’s biodynamic Pinot Noir. Barrel aged and full bodied, it shows red cherry, redcurrant and a savoury, earthy edge.
Description
Fixin lies at the northern tip of the Cote de Nuits, a village long overshadowed by its famous neighbours but capable of serious, structured Pinot Noir. This wine comes from the Clos Entre Deux Velles, a named lieu-dit, and is made by Philippe Charlopin-Parizot, one of Burgundy's more powerful growers. The soils here are limestone and marl with a stony surface, which drains well and pushes the vines to ripen fully while keeping acidity firm. The domaine farms biodynamically, and the fruit is aged in oak barrel, where gentle oxidation over many months softens the tannins and knits the wine together. Charlopin's hand shows in the depth of colour and the ripeness of the fruit, which is fuller than many Fixin reds. The nose leads with red cherry and redcurrant, backed by rose, earth and a little leather. The palate is dense and savoury, with ripe red fruit, fine tannins and a long, mineral finish. Serve at sixteen to eighteen degrees, decanted, in a Burgundy glass. It pairs well with roast poultry, duck and mushroom dishes.
