Description
Clos Saint Denis is a Grand Cru of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, lying between Gevrey-Chambertin and Clos de Vougeot, here made by Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot from Pinot Noir and farmed biodynamically. The cru sits on brown and calcareous soils that drain well and warm readily, a terroir prized for producing rich yet delicate, light-framed wines of marked elegance. The cool continental climate of the Côte, with warm days and cold nights, ripens Pinot Noir slowly and locks in its acidity and perfume. Charlopin is known for a deeper, more concentrated style than many growers, built on ripe fruit and careful oak ageing where slow oxygen exchange rounds the tannins and adds a measured frame of spice without masking the site. The wine is deep and very aromatic in the glass. The nose shows red cherry and forest berries with violet, liquorice and an earthy, mineral undertone. The palate is rich but fine, the red fruit carried by silky tannins and the bright acidity of the Côte, with a long, elegant finish. Serve at 16 degrees in a large glass. It suits roast game, poultry and mushroom dishes.
