Description
Philippe and Yan Charlopin run this father-and-son domaine in Burgundy, working old vines at low yields to make elegant Pinot Noir. Chambolle-Musigny is known for the most delicate and perfumed reds of the Cote de Nuits, a character that comes from its higher proportion of active limestone and lighter, stonier soils. The cool continental climate and slow ripening preserve acidity and floral aromatics, while the old vines give quiet concentration. The wine is traditionally vinified and aged eighteen months in French oak barrels, where the slow exchange of oxygen rounds the tannins and adds a fine spice without masking the fruit. The colour is a bright, medium ruby, the nose showing red cherry, raspberry, violet and a subtle undergrowth note. The palate is medium bodied and silky, with fine tannin, fresh acidity and a long, elegant finish that reflects the village's reputation for finesse. Serve at 16 degrees, in a Burgundy glass, decanting briefly if young. It suits lighter meats and mushroom dishes.
