Description
Charles Heidsieck are based in Reims and hold a reputation for one of the richest non-vintage styles in Champagne, built on a high proportion of mature reserve wines and long ageing in the house's ancient chalk cellars. The Brut Reserve blends Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier and is made by the traditional method, with the second fermentation in bottle followed by an extended rest on the lees that develops its toasted, nutty depth. It is finished at brut dosage.
The colour is a deeper gold with a fine, persistent bead. The nose is layered, moving from baked apple and quince to toasted bread, hazelnut, praline and a touch of honey. The palate is dry, broad and long, the mature fruit carried by a creamy mousse and a firm citrus-peel acidity into a savoury finish. Serve at around eight to ten degrees in a white-wine glass so the aromatics open. It suits richer fish, poultry, mushroom dishes and aged cheeses.
