Chandon de Briailles farms the Lavières premier cru in Savigny-lès-Beaune by biodynamic and organic methods. This Pinot Noir spends 18 months in French oak and shows red cherry, rose and a savoury, earthy depth from the Côte de Beaune limestone.
Description
Chandon de Briailles is a family estate in Savigny-lès-Beaune founded in 1834 and run since 1988 by the de Nicolay family, who farm organically and biodynamically across the northern Côte de Beaune. Les Lavières is a premier cru whose name points to its stony, limestone-rich soil over fractured marl, ground that drains freely and gives Pinot Noir from this site its red-fruited lift and savoury edge. The Burgundian climate is cool, and the wide day-to-night temperature range holds the grape's natural acidity and fine aromatics. Fruit is hand picked and the wine ages for 18 months in French oak, much of it used, which firms the tannin and adds breadth through gentle oxygen exchange while keeping the fruit in front. The colour is a pale, bright ruby. The nose carries red cherry, redcurrant and rose over a forest-floor earthiness, and the palate is light to medium bodied, with silky tannin, fresh acidity and a long mineral finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees in a large Burgundy glass. It suits roast duck, mushroom dishes and roast poultry.
