Chakana farms this Mendoza Malbec biodynamically at the foot of the Andes, with vines, aromatic plants and animals sharing one living estate. Raised in concrete rather than oak, it keeps pure blackberry and red-fruit lift, with pepper and a savoury edge.
Description
Chakana works the Finca Nuna estate in Luján de Cuyo, in the Cuyo region of Mendoza, under biodynamic and organic farming. The vineyards sit on the alluvial terraces below the Andes, where stony, free-draining soils and the wide diurnal swing between hot days and cold mountain nights slow ripening and lock in acidity and colour. That altitude-driven temperature range is what gives high-country Malbec its firm fruit and freshness at moderate alcohol. The wine is raised entirely in concrete, not oak, so fermentation and ageing add no wood flavour or tannin: the concrete holds a steady temperature and lets the wine settle on its fine lees while keeping the fruit primary and the texture rounded. The colour is deep violet. The nose leads with juicy blackberry, plum and red cherry, lifted by black pepper, thyme and a clear earthy note from the site. The palate is supple and fresh, with ripe but defined tannins and a savoury, mineral finish rather than a sweet oaky one. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, in a standard red glass. It suits grilled and roast red meats, lamb and roasted root vegetables.
