Ceretto, a Langhe family winery of more than 70 years, makes this Barolo from a 70-year-old vineyard in the Prapò cru, sitting between 270 and 380 metres. Organic Nebbiolo, barrel-aged, it shows cherry, rose, liquorice and the firm tannin Barolo is built on.
Description
Ceretto Barolo Prapò is a Nebbiolo from the Prapò vineyard in the DOCG Barolo, made by a Langhe family that has worked the region's leading denominations for over 70 years. The fruit comes from a single 70-year-old vineyard lying between 270 and 380 metres, where old vines and calcareous marl soils give Nebbiolo its scent and its grip. Barolo's continental climate, with warm days and cold nights, ripens this late grape slowly and preserves the high acidity and firm tannin that let it age for decades. The wine is farmed organically and aged in wood, traditionally large oak, where extended time on its tannins and slow oxygen exchange soften the structure and develop the savoury, tertiary character of mature Nebbiolo without masking the fruit. The colour is pale garnet, typical of the grape. The nose is perfumed, with sour cherry and rose over liquorice, leather, tobacco and an earthy, tarry note. The palate is full and firm, the tannins powerful but fine, the acidity bright, the finish very long. This is a wine for the cellar; serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted well ahead, with braised beef, truffle dishes or aged hard cheese.
