Ceretto makes this organic Barbera in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, Italy, from a single three hectare vineyard. Naturally high in acidity and low in tannin, it shows red cherry, plum and a savoury, peppery edge, fresh and ready for the table.
Description
Ceretto Barbera d'Alba Piana is an organic Barbera from D.O.C. Barbera d'Alba in Piedmont, Italy, made by Ceretto, one of the leading families of the Langhe. The estate farms across the Langhe hills and works only with certified ecological vineyards and local varieties chosen to express the site. This wine is drawn from a single three hectare vineyard. Barbera is the everyday red of Piedmont, prized for its deep colour and naturally high acidity paired with low tannin, which makes it fresh, juicy and a natural partner at the table. Grown on the calcareous marl soils of the Alba zone, it keeps a savoury, mineral backbone, while the diurnal swing of the hills holds its bright acidity. Vinified to protect the fruit, with restrained use of wood so the oak supports rather than dominates, this is a clean, fruit forward style. The wine is deep ruby, with a nose of red cherry, plum, red berry and a peppery, herbal edge. The palate is medium bodied and lively, with juicy red and dark fruit, soft tannins, fresh acidity and an earthy, savoury finish. Serve at 16 degrees. A classic with tomato based pasta and pizza.
