A heavily sugared Costa Rican dessert rum from Centenario, thick with caramel, vanilla, roasted nuts and candied fruit, soft and velvety at 40% and built more for the end of a meal than for slow analysis.

Description
Centenario Fundación 30 Años is made by the Fabrica Nacional de Licores in Costa Rica, in the soft, accessible Spanish style that dominates the smooth sipping mainstream. The 30 is a solera or marketing reference rather than a guaranteed age, so it is best described as a solera style blend rather than a three decade old rum.
The base is molasses run through column stills, producing a light, clean distillate whose flavour comes largely from oak and from added sugar. This is an openly sweetened rum, and the dosage is generous: thick caramel and vanilla lead, backed by roasted nuts, candied fruit and a toasty, woody edge that is rounder and less fruity than the lower age Centenarios. The texture is velvety and the finish sweet and caramelised. At 40% it is mild and easy, a comfort pour to serve after dinner or alongside dessert rather than a dry rum for picking apart.
