Description
Mas Picosa Organic is a young red from D.O. Montsant, made by Celler de Capçanes in southern Catalonia. The grapes grow on plots between 150 and 450 metres on clay soils and granite terraces, farmed organically under CCPA certification. The poor, free-draining ground keeps yields modest and concentrates the fruit, while the warm Mediterranean climate ripens the Grenache-led blend fully. Each variety is harvested by hand and fermented separately so the winemaker can balance the round red fruit of Grenache and Merlot against the structure of Mazuelo and Tempranillo, with a short four months in tank and barrel softening the tannins before bottling. The colour is deep cherry red. The nose shows ripe plum, red berries and a lift of black pepper and liquorice over a savoury, stony note from the granite soils. The palate is medium to full bodied, with rounded fruit, fine tannin and a fresh, earthy finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It works well with grilled lamb, roast beef and aged Manchego.
