Description
Celeste Roble comes from D.O. Ribera del Duero, made by Pago del Cielo from one hundred per cent Tinto Fino, the local name for Tempranillo. The grapes grow at around 900 metres above sea level near Peñafiel, an altitude that defines the appellation. Days are hot and bright while nights turn cold, and that wide diurnal swing slows ripening, fixing colour and aroma while holding the acidity that keeps these high-altitude reds fresh. The poor, stony soils limit vigour and concentrate the fruit. This is the roble or oak-aged tier rather than a long-aged Crianza: just three months in barrel, enough to round the edges and add a light frame of spice and smoke without covering the youthful fruit. The label carries the stars seen in the vineyard during the night harvest. Expect a deep, youthful purple red, juicy and full of ripe cherry and plum, with red berry, a soft smokiness, vanilla and a touch of liquorice from the brief oak. The palate is supple and fruit-forward with fresh acidity and gentle tannins. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, ideally within a couple of years. A versatile match for grilled and roast meats. Vegan friendly.
