Description
Cedro do Noval is a Douro red from Quinta do Noval, the historic estate set on the left bank of the Pinhão river in northern Portugal. The vines grow on high altitude terraces between 100 and 500 metres, on the broken schist soils that define the valley. Schist drains freely and forces the roots deep, while the altitude brings cool nights that slow ripening and preserve acidity and aroma. The blend leads on Syrah, with the native Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Cão adding floral lift, dark fruit and structure. After fermentation the wine ages for 18 months in 225 litre French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds spice and cocoa. The wine has a youthful exuberance and a moderate, well judged structure. The nose shows red fruits and plum with black pepper, rose petal and a savoury, mineral edge from the schist. The palate is fresh and balanced, with ripe fruit, fine tannins and a long finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, and a short decant will open the aromatics. It pairs well with grilled and roast meats.
