Description
Cuentaviñas is the project of Eduardo Eguren, built around three vineyards in San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta, where each plot is farmed and bottled to show its own character. This Garnacha comes from old vines on poor clay limestone and stony soils that drain well and yield small, concentrated berries. The area sits at altitude with a continental climate, and the wide gap between hot days and cold nights builds ripe fruit and colour while holding a thread of acidity. At fourteen point five percent this is a generous, full bodied style. The wine is aged fourteen months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood firms the tannins, rounds the texture and adds vanilla, sweet spice and a faint smoky edge. The colour is a deep red with violet reflections. The nose shows ripe black plum, dark cherry and blackberry, with black pepper, liquorice and a vanilla spice from the barrel. The palate is rich and broad, with ripe fruit, warm alcohol, ripe tannins and a long spiced finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant for an hour. It suits grilled red meat and roasts.
