A sweetened spiced rum from Compagnie des Indes at 40%, heavy on ginger, nutmeg, clove and citrus over a molasses base, very much a winter-spice mixer for grog and Dark and Stormy serves rather than a neat sipping rum.
Description
This CDI Spiced sits apart from Compagnie des Indes' purist single casks: a column-still molasses blend, around five years old, openly sweetened and bottled at 40% as a frankly spice-led mixer. CDI is candid about its few dosed releases, and this is one of them, built for the bar rather than the tasting table.
The nose is all winter spice, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon and clove, with the rum itself taking a back seat. The palate carries ginger, liquorice and clove, finishing on nutmeg, oak and a faintly medicinal edge. The added sugar and heavy spicing make it a poor candidate for neat drinking but a fun and affordable base for grog, hot buttered rum or a Dark and Stormy. Taken for what it is, a characterful spiced mixer rather than a sipping rum, it brings plenty of seasoning to a cocktail.
