A cask strength single cask of Reunion Savanna from Compagnie des Indes, 12 years in ex-bourbon oak at 56.8%, with glue and varnish funk, tropical fruit, menthol and balanced oak, a near Grand Arome experience that rewards air.
Description
Compagnie des Indes is a respected French bottler, and this single cask is a 2011 Savanna from Reunion, aged 12 years in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at cask strength 56.8%. Savanna is unusual in making several distinct rum families at one distillery, and this cask leans into the funky, estery side of the house.
Expect a heavier, glue-and-varnish character close to the distillery's famous Grand Arome without going fully overboard: a nose of varnish, wood, pastries and butterscotch, a palate of brown sugar, glue, dark chocolate and tropical fruit, then a finish of menthol, allspice, oak and marzipan. It needs plenty of air and patience to open. For those who enjoy that estery, slightly medicinal Savanna profile, it rewards slow sipping and works in thoughtful cocktails like a rum sour.
