Whispering Angel is the benchmark Provence rosé from Château d’Esclans, northeast of Saint-Tropez. A Grenache-led blend with Rolle and Cinsault, vinified in stainless steel for freshness. Pale and dry, with ripe strawberry, peach and a citrus edge.
Description
Château d'Esclans sits high on a plot northeast of Saint-Tropez, 25 kilometres from Frejus, in the AOC Côtes de Provence. Sacha Lichine acquired the estate in 2006 with the aim of producing serious Provence rosé, and Whispering Angel has become the reference point for the style. It blends Grenache with Rolle and Cinsault. The Provence climate is warm and Mediterranean, tempered by coastal influence and the dry mistral wind, which keeps the fruit healthy and concentrates flavour without heaviness. Direct pressing and four months in stainless steel tank protect the primary fruit and the very pale colour, with cool fermentation locking in freshness and aromatic detail rather than building oak or texture. The colour is pale, almost silver pink. The nose shows ripe strawberry, white peach and a subtle citrus lift, with hints of melon and white flowers. The palate is dry and crisp, with red fruit and a faint saline grip carried on clean acidity to a refreshing finish. Serve chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It is built for the aperitif hour but takes happily to grilled fish, seafood and light salads.
