Description
Langhe Rosato is made by Isacco Costamagna at Castrum Roche di Costamagna in Piedmont, from Nebbiolo, the grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco. The fruit grows in La Morra on slopes that form a natural amphitheatre open to the east and southeast, catching the morning light. That exposure, combined with the cool nights of the Langhe hills, gives a long, even ripening and preserves the high acidity and fine aromatics that define Nebbiolo. The calcareous marl soils of the area add structure and lift. Made as a rosato, the grapes see only brief skin contact before pressing, so the wine stays pale and delicate rather than taking on the colour and tannin of a red. Fermentation and three months of ageing in stainless steel keep the wine fresh and protect the primary fruit and floral character, with no oak influence. The colour is a pale, bright pink, with aromas of wild strawberry, red cherry and the rose and tar perfume typical of Nebbiolo, lifted by white peach and citrus. The palate is dry, light and crisp, with a clean, savoury finish. Serve chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
