Description
Castell de Raimat Chardonnay is a single variety Chardonnay from D.O. Costers del Segre, made by the Raimat estate near Lleida, and farmed organically. The vineyards sit on limestone soils that are low in organic matter, the kind of poor, well drained ground that limits vigour and concentrates the fruit. The climate here is continental, with occasional winter frosts, very hot summers and an average annual temperature of 14 to 15 degrees, so the warm days ripen the fruit while the cool nights hold on to acidity and aroma. This is a fresh style of Chardonnay, made without oak, so the wine keeps its bright primary fruit and stays lively rather than broad. A cool, clean fermentation in stainless steel protects the aromatics. The colour is bright straw yellow. The nose is intense and lively, with melon, peach, nectarine and a lychee note, backed by tropical fruit and citrus. The palate is fresh and juicy, the ripe stone fruit balanced by a citrus backbone, closing clean. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees.
