Cascina delle Rose, run by Giovanna Rizzolio, makes this Barbaresco from Nebbiolo on the Marcorino cru. Aged in Slavonian oak and farmed naturally, it shows the grape’s classic profile of sour cherry, rose, dried herbs and fine, firm tannin.
Description
Cascina delle Rose is a small Piedmont estate run by Giovanna Rizzolio, one of the first women to lead a winery in the Langhe. This Barbaresco comes from Nebbiolo grown on the Marcorino cru, where calcareous marl soils give the grape its perfume, acidity and fine-grained tannin. Piedmont's cool continental climate and the wide day-to-night temperature swing ripen Nebbiolo slowly, which preserves the bright acidity and aromatic lift that define the wine. The farming is natural and organic, and the wine ages in large Slavonian oak casks, where the neutral wood allows gentle oxygen exchange to soften the tannins over time without adding oak flavour, keeping the focus on fruit and terroir. The colour is a pale, translucent garnet typical of Nebbiolo. The nose shows sour cherry and red currant with rose, dried herbs, leather and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied and structured, with high acidity, firm but fine tannins and a long, savoury, earthy finish. This is a classic, age-worthy Langhe red. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant for an hour. It is made for slow-cooked meats, game and truffle.
