Description
Casar Godello is a single-variety white from Casar de Burbia, a family winery working between Carracedelo and Posada del Bierzo. The estate is better known for reviving old Mencía vineyards around Valtuille de Arriba, and it brings the same attention to Godello, one of Galicia and Bierzo's finest white grapes. Bierzo sits in a sheltered basin ringed by mountains, with a mix of slate and alluvial soils and a climate that combines Atlantic freshness with continental warmth, giving ripe fruit with firm acidity. This wine sees no oak. Instead it is aged for eight months on its lees in stainless steel, and that is central to the style: regular contact with the spent yeast releases mannoproteins that build body and a creamy texture, and adds a subtle bready, savoury layer while the tank preserves the pure fruit and freshness. The result is a Godello with weight and stone fruit but a clean, mineral line. Expect a pale straw colour, a nose of white peach, pear and white flowers, and a rounded palate with lemon, melon and a fine, almond-tinged finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
