Casal de Armán makes this red in D.O. Ribeiro, in Atlantic Galicia, from native Brancellao, Caíño Tinto and Sousón. Just four months in oak keep it fresh and perfumed, with red berries, redcurrant and a peppery, herbal edge.
Description
Casal de Armán works in D.O. Ribeiro in Galicia, the historic region whose wines were once carried to Santiago de Compostela by the arrieiros. This red is a blend of native Galician grapes, Brancellao, Caíño Tinto and Sousón, varieties built for the cool, wet Atlantic climate. That maritime influence and the granite-derived soils give high natural acidity, moderate alcohol and a fresh, aromatic style rather than a heavy one. Caíño and Sousón bring colour, structure and a peppery, savoury edge, while Brancellao adds floral red fruit and perfume. The wine spends only four months in oak, enough to settle it without covering the fruit, leaving the bright varietal character intact. The colour is a vivid medium ruby. The nose is perfumed, with red berries, redcurrant and cherry over black pepper, thyme and a floral, rose-like note. The palate is light to medium-bodied, with fresh acidity, fine tannin and an earthy, savoury finish. Serve a little cool at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits roast chicken, charcuterie and lighter game.
