Casa Pratas makes Carrasqueira in the Tejo of central Portugal from Castelao, Syrah and Tinta Roriz. Aged in barrel in a natural style, at 14% alcohol, it shows dark plum, blackberry and a peppery, savoury depth.
Description
Casa Pratas makes Carrasqueira in the Tejo region of central Portugal, on the sandy and clay-limestone soils of the river plain. The blend leads with the local Castelao, supported by Syrah and Tinta Roriz, which is Tempranillo. The warm, sun-rich climate of the Tejo ripens these varieties fully, accounting for the 14% alcohol, while the river's moderating influence and the deeper clay soils help retain acidity and structure. The wine is made naturally with minimal intervention and aged in barrel, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds a savoury, spiced depth without dominating the fruit. The colour is a deep ruby. The nose shows dark plum, blackberry and red cherry, with black pepper, dried herbs and a touch of leather from the Castelao. The palate is medium to full bodied, dry and savoury, the tannins ripe and firm and the finish carrying spice and earth. This is a structured, food-led Iberian red. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, with a short decant. It calls for grilled and roasted meat.
