Casa Balaguer make this fresh, unoaked Monastrell from plots in Villena, in D.O. Alicante. Fermented with native yeasts and 30 percent whole bunches, it is juicy and fruity, with cherry, red berry and a peppery lift.
Description
Tragolargo is a single-variety Monastrell from D.O. Alicante, made by Casa Balaguer-Vinessens from plots in Villena. This is a young wine with no oak ageing, built to show the bright, juicy side of Monastrell rather than its weight. The grapes ferment with their native yeasts, the wild population present on the fruit and in the cellar, which gives a more individual character than cultured strains. Around 30 percent of the stalks are kept in the ferment, and this whole-bunch fraction adds a green, peppery freshness and a little extra grip that lifts the ripe Alicante fruit. Farming is natural, organic and vegan, respectful of the land. The colour is a bright, youthful purple-red. The nose shows cherry and red berries with a peppery, herbal edge from the stems. The palate is light to medium bodied, fresh and easy drinking, with soft tannins and a clean finish. At 14 percent alcohol it stays approachable and food friendly. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits grilled pork, roast chicken and tomato-based dishes.
