Description
Carpetano de Valquejigoso is a Garnacha from the Madrid region, made at the Valquejigoso estate in collaboration with winemaker Raul Perez. Garnacha is a heat-tolerant grape that ripens fully in Madrid's continental climate, building the wine's 14.5 per cent alcohol and ripe red fruit, while altitude and cool nights preserve freshness and lift its peppery, herbal side. The estate champions the character of its terroir and farms with respect for the land. Ageing took place over 12 months in large foudres; the size of these vessels means a low ratio of wood surface to wine, so they soften and structure the Garnacha through slow oxygen exchange while adding little overt oak flavour, keeping the fruit and site to the fore. The colour is deep cherry red. The nose is generous, showing ripe red berries and plum with black pepper, dried herbs and a savoury, earthy note. The palate is rich and intense but balanced, the ripe fruit framed by fine tannins and fresh acidity, closing on liquorice and a mineral, slightly smoky finish. Serve at 16 to 18C. It suits roast lamb, grilled red meats and hearty stews.
