Description
This official Cardhu, cask Batch Cs/cR.12.14, at 40%. Cardhu, owned by Diageo, is the malt that gave Johnnie Walker its heart. Water comes from springs on Mannoch Hill and the Lyne Burn.
It was distilled in pear shaped stills for a soft, sweet spirit, for an easy, approachable spirit. A refill bourbon hogshead held it, keeping the soft character to the fore. No age is given, but vanillin vanilla and a soft pear are well integrated. Years in oak round the spirit, the apple and pear deepening to honey. It runs three wash and three spirit stills, all of a pear shape. It was rebuilt and expanded by Elizabeth Cumming, the Queen of the Whisky Trade, who sold it to John Walker and Sons in 1893. A 2003 plan to sell a vatted malt under the Cardhu name caused an industry outcry, and was reversed. Its soft, sweet make was built for easy drinking and for the heart of a blend.
At 40% it is gentle, sweet and fruity. Apple, pear and a soft vanilla, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft orchard fruit and honey sit behind the cask. The finish is soft, sweet and gently fruity. This is an easy, approachable Speyside single malt.
