Description
An official release of Cardhu, at 40%. Cardhu was founded in 1824 by John and Helen Cumming on Speyside's Mannoch Hill. Its malt has been the heart of the Johnnie Walker blends ever since.
Drawn off three pairs of pear shaped stills, to build a gentle, fruity character. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, a soft vanilla beneath the fruit. With no age statement, the oak has given vanillin as vanilla and oak lactones as coconut over the soft, fruity spirit. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the soft, sweet spirit. Most Cardhu is laid down for blending, a little kept back as single malt. Most of its make goes into Johnnie Walker, with a little bottled as single malt. It sits among the gentle hills above the River Spey near Archiestown. It was rebuilt and expanded by Elizabeth Cumming, the Queen of the Whisky Trade, who sold it to John Walker and Sons in 1893.
At 40% it is smooth and honeyed. A smooth, sweet fruitiness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. It is gentle and sweet, the soft spirit shining through. A smooth, honeyed finish ends on pear and vanilla. This is an easy, approachable Speyside single malt.
