A 23 year old Uitvlugt bottled under the Bonpland label, matured in ex-bourbon and presented at a gentle 45%, with spiced pear, orange and grapes giving it an almost mulled-wine character that stays dry and balanced.
Description
Capulet & Montague Brands Uitvlugt Bonpland 1993 is a vintage Demerara from the lost Uitvlugt estate, whose Savalle column gave a refined, fruity, lightly spiced spirit before production moved to Diamond. Bottled under the Bonpland name from a 1993 vintage, this is a long-aged example of the cleaner, more elegant side of Guyana rather than the heavy timber of the wooden pot stills.
The rum spent more than two decades in ex-bourbon wood and is bottled at an unhurried 45%. The nose carries pear, orange and grapes with a wash of spice, an effect close to a spiced pear wine laced with Christmas spices. The palate keeps that spiced pear running alongside orange and an oily texture, while the finish brings oak, fruit and a winey note. It stays dry and balanced throughout, a measured old Uitvlugt that trades power for poise.
