Capulet & Montague’s Bonpland bottles a 14-year-old Panamanian from 2004, ex-bourbon ageing carrying roasted almond and barrel smoke into vanilla, caramel and toffee, a soft, sippable column-molasses rum at 45%.
Description
Part of the German-bottled Bonpland series, this is a 2004 Panamanian rum aged fourteen years, drawn from the soft, vanilla-spice tradition that has made Panama a major source for independent bottlers. It is a column-distilled molasses spirit matured in ex-bourbon wood, presented without fuss at a comfortable strength.
The aroma leads with roasted almonds, a wisp of barrel smoke and burnt sugar, an unusually nutty opening for the origin. The palate softens into vanilla, caramel, toffee and dark chocolate, while the finish returns to roasted, nutty wood. At 45% it is stable and easy-drinking, neither thin nor heavy, a well-mannered Panamanian sipper that rewards the nose as much as the palate and slots neatly into a relaxed evening pour.
