Captain Morgan Private Stock is a molasses based spiced rum aged a couple of years in oak and dressed up as the richer, fuller version of the familiar range. It is honest about its lane, a sweet, soft and easy drink rather than a deep, structured sipper.

Bottled at 40% and clearly sweetened, it leads with vanilla, sugar and burnt sugar, finishing on white chocolate, caramel and milk chocolate with little alcohol bite. The sweetness and added spice carry it, and there is not much structure or oak depth underneath. It is at its best on the rocks as an easy pour, or as a fuller flavoured mixer where the caramel and spice cut through. Drinkers who already enjoy sugary, gentle spiced rum will find this a smoother, more dessert leaning take, while those after dry rum character should pass.
