Caperdonich Secret Speyside Vintage Edition 32 Years Old 1991

    Secret Speyside Vintage Edition
    700ml / 48.6%
    Single Malt

    $3501

An official Caperdonich, a 32 year old, 1991, at 48.6%. A soft, fruity malt of pear, cream and gentle spice. With the distillery gone, every bottle is from a finite, dwindling stock. A pipeline once carried its make across the road to Glen Grant. Chivas released an official Secret Speyside Caperdonich in 2019. This is a soft, fruity Speyside malt of real age.

An official release of Caperdonich, a 32 year old, from 1991, at 48.6%, 1320 bottles in all. Caperdonich, once Glen Grant No.2, ran in Rothes until Pernod Ricard closed it in 2002. After closure the site was sold to the coppersmith Forsyths, who demolished it in 2011.

The spirit was distilled from unpeated malt in tall Glen Grant style stills, giving the soft pear and mint of the house style. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, a soft vanilla beneath the fruit. In its ethereal years the malt is waxy and oxidative, faded esters and a touch of sotolon (maple, spice). The light Speyside make gains most of its depth from decades in good oak. Ethyl esters built over the years lend the pear and tropical fruit of old Caperdonich. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the fruity, waxy core over the decades. The tall, Glen Grant style stills give a light spirit that ages with grace. The distillery is gone, demolished in 2011, so what sleeps in cask is all there is.

At a full 48.6% it is bold yet fruity. A creamy, fruity sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is waxy, the fruit carried on a creamy body. The finish runs waxy, fruity and soft. This is a single malt from a silent Speyside distillery.
