Caperdonich 39 Years Old 1968 Cask #PDA 368 (Part des Anges)

    Closed Distilleries
    700ml / 50.1%
    Single Malt

    $3097

A 39 year old Caperdonich from the bottler Part des Anges, 1968, at 50.1%. A soft, fruity malt of pear, cream and gentle spice. The distillery was demolished in 2011 to expand a coppersmith’s works. Rarely bottled in its lifetime, most Caperdonich comes from independents. This is the creamy, fruity ghost of Glen Grant’s sister.

This Caperdonich was bottled by the bottler Part des Anges, a 39 year old, distilled in 1968, from cask PDA 368, bottled at 50.1%. Caperdonich was a Speyside malt distillery, its spirit long destined for blends. It closed in 1902 after the Pattison crash, lying silent for over sixty years.

Drawn off the tall stills on Caperdonich Burn water, building the fruity Caperdonich style. Decades in ex-Bourbon oak drew out vanilla and a waxy depth. Ethereal and fragile, decades draw the malt to a waxy, tropical delicacy of sotolon and old oak. Years in oak round the spirit, the pear and cream deepening with age. With the distillery gone, the casks that remain are a finite record of its make. Long ageing turns the fresh pear towards mango, beeswax and a polished oak. The tall, Glen Grant style stills give a light spirit that ages with grace. Slow oxidation over decades draws the creamy spirit towards a waxy, fruity richness. No more will ever be made, the distillery silent since 2002.

Undiluted at 50.1%, it is layered. Mango, pear and a soft vanilla, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft pear and a waxy cream sit behind the cask. A long, fruity finish carries a tropical lift. This is a waxy, pear scented Speyside single malt.
