The Huntly bottler Duncan Taylor’s Caperdonich, a 27 year old, 1992, at 56%. A creamy Speyside fruit, all pear, vanilla and a mint lift. Rarely bottled in its lifetime, most Caperdonich comes from independents. It was built as Glen Grant No.2 in 1898 and closed in 2002. This is one of Speyside’s vanished single malts.

Description
A Caperdonich drawn by the Huntly bottler Duncan Taylor, distilled in 1992, from cask 4125633, bottled at 56%, one of 90 bottles. Caperdonich was a Speyside distillery in Rothes, closed in 2002 and since demolished. It was extended to four stills in 1967, run by only a couple of workers.
Worked through the distillery's four tall stills, building the fruity Caperdonich style. First fill bourbon gave it a fuller vanilla and a touch of coconut. In these late years the spirit concentrates to a waxy, tropical depth held in an ellagitannin frame. The light, creamy spirit takes cask flavour readily while keeping its pear and mint. A pipeline known as the whisky pipe once carried its spirit across the road to Glen Grant. Caperdonich leaned to cream, pear and mint where Glen Grant showed green apple. Refill oak lets the soft, fruity Caperdonich character lead the way. With Caperdonich demolished, every bottle draws on a finite, dwindling stock.
At its natural 56% it is concentrated. Soft pear, cream and a waxy oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Mango, pear and a soft vanilla fill the middle. The finish runs waxy, fruity and soft. This is Caperdonich's creamy, fruity Speyside style.
