The bottler The Whisky Agency’s Caperdonich, a 22 year old, 1991, at 49.7%. Soft pear, cream and a waxy oil run through it. Its four stills were dispersed when the distillery was dismantled. A pipeline once carried its make across the road to Glen Grant. Rarely bottled in its lifetime, most Caperdonich comes from independents. This is the creamy, fruity ghost of Glen Grant’s sister.

Description
The bottler The Whisky Agency selected this Caperdonich, a 22 year old, distilled in 1991, bottled at 49.7%, one of 299 bottles. Caperdonich, a ghost of Speyside, was demolished in 2011 to make way for a coppersmith's works. Its four stills were dispersed, a pair going as far as Belgium and others to Falkirk.
The spirit was run through the distillery's tall copper stills, to build a clean, waxy, fruity character. Decades in ex-Bourbon oak drew out vanilla and a waxy depth. In the oxidative, evaporative years concentration brings tropical esters of mango and pineapple over a waxy cream. The cool Speyside air gave a slow, even maturation in the Rothes warehouses. The light, creamy spirit takes cask flavour readily while keeping its pear and mint. It is named, like the burn, from the Gaelic for the secret well. Maturation in the cool north east kept the spirit fresh across long years. The distillery is gone, demolished in 2011, so what sleeps in cask is all there is.
Undiluted at 49.7%, it is layered. Apple, pear and a soft honey, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A baked pear and a soft spice lift it. The finish runs waxy, fruity and soft. This is a single malt from a silent Speyside distillery.
