An official Caperdonich, a 21 year old, at 48%. Pear, vanilla and a green mint over a waxy body. Its spirit went largely into blends like Chivas Regal and Royal Salute. Rarely bottled in its lifetime, most Caperdonich comes from independents. A pipeline once carried its make across the road to Glen Grant. This is a waxy, pear scented malt from a demolished distillery.

Description

A 21 year old Caperdonich, a distillery release, cask Batch CP/005, at 48%. Caperdonich, once Glen Grant No.2, ran in Rothes until Pernod Ricard closed it in 2002. It was rarely bottled as a single malt in its lifetime, so most come from independents.

Worked through the distillery's four tall stills, to build a clean, waxy, fruity character. A refill bourbon hogshead held it, keeping the distillery character to the fore. At oxidative maturity ellagitannin tannins lend a polished frame to the oily, fruit rich malt. Maturation in the cool north east kept the spirit fresh across long years. With the distillery gone, the casks that remain are a finite record of its make. It closed in 1902 after the Pattison crash, lying silent for over sixty years. Refill oak lets the soft, fruity Caperdonich character lead the way. After closure the site was sold to the coppersmith Forsyths, who demolished it in 2011. No more will ever be made, the distillery silent since 2002.

At 48%, undiluted, it is deep and fruity. Soft pear, cream and a waxy oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A tropical fruit and a gentle oak give it depth. A long, creamy finish ends on pear and vanilla. This is a single malt from a silent Speyside distillery.
