Description
A Caperdonich of a 20 year old chosen by the bottler Jack Wiebers Whisky World, distilled in 1992, from cask 121112, bottled at 53.4%, one of 315 bottles. Caperdonich was a Speyside distillery in Rothes, closed in 2002 and since demolished. Seagram bought it in 1977, and Pernod Ricard closed it in 2002.
This was drawn off the tall stills on Caperdonich Burn water, giving the soft pear and mint of the house style. An American oak cask shaped it, soft and creamy beneath the fruit. Oxidative maturity brings a waxy, fruity depth, ethyl esters of tropical fruit building over the pear. With the distillery gone, the casks that remain are a finite record of its make. Caperdonich leaned to cream, pear and mint where Glen Grant showed green apple. The oily, waxy texture is a mark of well aged Caperdonich. It closed in 1902 after the Pattison crash, lying silent for over sixty years. Closed in 2002 and later demolished, its profile is fixed for good.
At a hearty 53.4% it carries real weight. Pear, vanilla and a green mint lift, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A tropical fruit and a gentle oak give it depth. The finish is deep, waxy and tropical. This is Caperdonich, the lost twin of Glen Grant.
