    Caperdonich 18 Years Old Cask #Batch CP/003

    Peated – Small Batch Release
    700ml / 48%
    Single Malt

    $179

An 18 year old Caperdonich from the distillery at 48%. A soft, fruity malt of pear, cream and gentle spice. The distillery was demolished in 2011 to expand a coppersmith’s works. Rarely bottled in its lifetime, most Caperdonich comes from independents. Its four stills were dispersed when the distillery was dismantled. This is the creamy, fruity ghost of Glen Grant’s sister.

This official Caperdonich, an 18 year old, cask Batch CP/003, at 48%. Caperdonich was built in 1898 as Glen Grant No.2, the sister distillery across the road from Glen Grant. Its character was close to Glen Grant but its own, less green apple, more cream, pear and mint.

This was made in tall copper stills for a light, fruity spirit, for a soft, fruity, oily make. A refill bourbon hogshead held it, keeping the distillery character to the fore. Through oxidative maturity esters concentrate, pear turning to mango over a waxy, creamy body. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the fruit. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the fruity, waxy core over the decades. The cool Speyside air gave a slow, even maturation in the Rothes warehouses. The light Speyside make gains most of its depth from decades in good oak. With Caperdonich demolished, every bottle draws on a finite, dwindling stock.

At cask strength 48% it is full bodied. A creamy, fruity sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft pear and a waxy cream sit behind the cask. The finish is long, fruity and waxy. This is a creamy, tropical Speyside single malt of real age.
