Description
An 8 year old Caol Ila from the bottler Meadowside Blending, from cask 311129, bottled at 53.9%, one of 303 bottles. Caol Ila is among the most widely traded of Islay's single malts. Its peated character is built on malt smoked to a medium level of phenols.
It was made from medium peated malt for a clean, smoky spirit, for a smoke more elegant than heavy. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, a soft vanilla beneath the spirit. Early, extractive maturation draws vanillin (vanilla) and furfural (toasted almond) from the wood over a clean, phenolic smoke. Refill oak lets the maritime peat and lemon of the spirit lead the way. Phenols from the peat smoke carry the medicinal, lemony edge through the years. A ferry crosses the Sound from Port Askaig to Jura and the mainland. Most of its peated malt is destined for the Johnnie Walker blends.
Bottled at a cask strength 53.9%, it is intense. Smoke, lemon and a peppery oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Beneath the smoke run lemon, brine and a peppery oil. The finish runs oily, smoky and clean. This is a clean Islay smoke from the island's largest distillery.
