The bottler North Star Spirits released this Caol Ila, an 8 year old, 2014, at 51.2%. A bonfire smoke threads through lemon, brine and oil. An east coast Islay distillery on the narrow Sound of Islay. Water comes from Loch nam Ban, above the distillery. It is the most independently bottled of all the Islay malts. This is an east coast Islay single malt of real charm.

Description
From the bottler North Star Spirits, an 8 year old Caol Ila, distilled in 2014, bottled at 51.2%, one of 220 bottles. Caol Ila sends more spirit to independent bottlers than almost any malt. The six tall stills sit behind picture windows looking out to Jura.
Drawn off the distillery's six tall stills from peated barley, for the light, maritime smoke Caol Ila is known for. Years in ex-Bourbon wood lent a soft vanilla and a coastal calm. Early, extractive maturation draws vanillin (vanilla) and furfural (toasted almond) from the wood over a clean, phenolic smoke. Sea air works into the maturing casks, lending a briny, coastal lift. The clean, oily spirit takes cask flavour well while holding its citrus and smoke. A slow maturation in the cool island air keeps the spirit fresh and oily. Most of its peated malt is destined for the Johnnie Walker blends.
At a natural 51.2% it is full and oily. Ashy smoke, lemon oil and a saline tang, with a touch of vanilla and toffee. Smoked lemon and sea salt build over an oily body. It finishes smoky, oily and bright. This is a maritime, lemony Islay single malt.
