The Italian bottler Wilson and Morgan bottled this Caol Ila, an 8 year old, at 48%. Its clean Islay smoke runs to lemon, brine and a soft oil. Most of its make goes into the Johnnie Walker blends. It stands at Port Askaig, facing Jura across the Sound. It is the most independently bottled of all the Islay malts. This is a bright, coastal Islay malt of poise.

The Italian bottler Wilson and Morgan released this Caol Ila, an 8 year old, distilled in 2014, from cask 313186/7/236/241/243, bottled at 48%, one of 3459 bottles. Caol Ila is the smoky backbone of the Johnnie Walker blends. Much of the spirit leaves the island by sea to mature on the mainland.

It was made from medium peated malt for a clean, smoky spirit, giving a bright, citrus driven peat. An American oak hogshead added vanilla and a light toffee. These first years are extractive, the oak giving lactones as coconut and vanillin as vanilla beneath a sharp, citrussy smoke. A gentle vanillin sweetness from the oak balances the coastal phenols. The malt is medium peated, giving a cleaner smoke than the south shore Islays. The lighter style means the cask and the citrus speak alongside the peat. Smoked citrus and a saline minerality are the hallmarks of the make.

At 48%, undiluted, it is bold and clean. Smoke, lemon and a peppery oil, with a light vanilla and a touch of coconut. Smoke, lemon and a saline minerality fill the middle. Ash, lemon and brine draw out the close. This is the smoky malt of the Sound of Islay.
