From the independent Murray McDavid, an 11 year old Caol Ila 2014, at 56.3%. Clean and coastal, the smoke leans to lemon and olive oil, with raisin and a caramelised nuttiness from the cask. It is the most independently bottled of all the Islay malts. Most of its make goes into the Johnnie Walker blends. This is a polished, maritime Islay single malt.

Description
The independent Murray McDavid bottled this Caol Ila, an 11 year old, distilled in 2014, from cask 2100641, bottled at 56.3%, one of 285 bottles. Caol Ila wears its Islay smoke more lightly than its southern neighbours. Much of the spirit leaves the island by sea to mature on the mainland.
This was drawn off a high cut from peated barley, for a smoky spirit with a citrus lift. A first fill sherry cask drove a deep, figgy, nutty character. Through integration the spirit and cask settle, lactone coconut and a soft vanillin balancing the easing phenols. The clean, oily spirit takes cask flavour well while holding its citrus and smoke. The lighter style means the cask and the citrus speak alongside the peat. From a small Victorian works it grew into one of Scotland's biggest malt distilleries. The spirit's lightness lets sherry, wine and bourbon casks all show through.
Undiluted at 56.3%, it is powerful. Wood smoke, lemon zest and brine, with raisin and a caramelised nuttiness from the cask. Smoke, lemon and a saline minerality fill the middle. A smoky, oily warmth lingers with lemon and salt. This is a clean, smoky Islay single malt from Caol Ila.
