Description
Cantos del Diablo is a single-varietal Garnacha made by Daniel Landi within the D.O. Méntrida, in the Sierra de Gredos. The fruit comes from a single estate in El Real de San Vicente, with vines over 60 years old planted at around 900 metres on north-facing slopes. The altitude and continental climate give cold nights and a long, slow ripening that builds aromatic complexity and retains acidity, while the decomposed granite soils of Gredos lend a fine, mineral structure and lift the fruit rather than weighing it down. Landi farms organically, with full respect for the site. After fermentation the wine ages fourteen months in a range of barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood integrates the tannins and adds gentle spice without covering the fruit. It is a bright, deep red. The nose is fragrant, with red berry and cherry fruit, rose and violet, black pepper and wild herbs over a stony, earthy base. The palate is medium bodied and fresh, with fine tannins, vivid acidity and a long, mineral finish. Served from a magnum, it shows the perfume and freshness of high-altitude Garnacha. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees with roast poultry or game.
