Description
Finca Valpiedra is a single estate set in a meander of the river Ebro in La Rioja Media, with 80 hectares of vineyards between Cenicero and Fuenmayor. Cantos de Valpiedra is made entirely from Tempranillo grown on the estate. The vineyards sit on the river terraces, where rounded stones, or cantos, give the wine its name and shape its character. These gravel and pebble soils drain freely and reflect heat back onto the vines, while the river moderates temperature and the altitude keeps the nights cool, holding acidity in the fruit. The grapes are hand-harvested in the third week of September. After fermentation in stainless steel at controlled temperatures, the wine macerates on the skins for around two weeks to extract colour and tannin, then ages for twelve months in French and American oak barrels. The French oak lends finesse and spice while the American oak adds a sweeter vanilla note, and slow oxygen exchange through the wood softens the tannins. Malolactic fermentation rounds the acidity. It shows a deep ruby colour, with a nose of ripe cherry, plum and sweet oak spice over an earthy base. The palate is medium bodied and balanced, with fine tannins and a fresh, stony finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits roast lamb, grilled beef and aged cheeses.
