Description
Cantina Marilina farms organically in the Noto Valley of south-eastern Sicily, near Syracuse, where winemaker Angelo Paterno makes this Grecanico. Grecanico is a native Sicilian white grape suited to the island's warmth and long sunshine hours, which give ripe fruit while the coastal setting and cool nights hold on to freshness. Sketta is aged in concrete rather than oak. The inert cement tanks add no wood flavour and let the wine develop with only a slow, minimal exchange of air, so the focus stays on clear varietal fruit and a rounded, textured body. The wine rests for around six months in cement and a further three months in bottle before release. It pours bright pale straw, with a nose of lemon, white peach, melon and white flowers over a herbal, Mediterranean lift. The palate is dry and medium bodied, with citrus and stone fruit, a light saline note and fresh acidity through a clean finish. Serve chilled at 9 to 11 degrees in a white-wine glass.
