Tomeu Llabrés makes this Mallorcan red from Manto Negro, the island’s native grape, at Ca’n Verdura in D.O. Binissalem. Farmed biodynamically with minimal intervention, it shows fresh red berries, rose and a light, savoury palate.
Description
Ca'n Verdura Viticultors, run by Tomeu Llabrés, works in D.O. Binissalem on Mallorca, a small Balearic appellation gaining recognition for wines made from native grapes. Son Agulló is built on Manto Negro, the island's signature red, a thin skinned variety that gives pale colour, gentle tannin and fragrant red fruit. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically and the wine is made as a natural wine with minimal intervention. The Mediterranean climate is warm and dry, tempered by sea breezes, and the limestone and clay soils drain freely, while careful low intervention winemaking and only a short, light touch of oak keep the focus on freshness and the grape's delicate aromatics. Ageing runs through French oak barrels for around ten months with brief time in stainless steel and bottle, building texture without obscuring the fruit. The colour is light ruby. The nose is fragrant with strawberry, red cherry, rose petal and dried herbs over a faint earthy, peppery note. The palate is light to medium bodied, fresh and savoury, with soft tannins and a clean finish. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits lighter meats and vegetable dishes.
